During the COVID lock down periods throughout 2020 and 2021, Lampson continued to operate on essential services. Australia’s Largest Engineering Project, Snowy 2.0, was waiting on the delivery of its project equipment and Tunnel Boring Machine components – so the work had to continue.
Lampson proceeded to load, transport and deliver around 300 loads from NSW’s Port Kembla to the site located in The Snowy Mountains. Some items, such as the TBM Cutter Head, measured 8.0m is diameter and were the widest ever taken through the mountainous terrain. A special self propelled trailer was required to transport the last 15km into site as the steep and narrow road was not yet constructed to accept that width cargo.
A range of transport equipment was applied to the package of TBM loads – there were three complete boring machines along with significant number of other parts required for the project. Floats, flat tops, step decks, extendibles and Platform Trailers up to 16 axles long were utilised. The SPMT was configured in 6, 9 or 12 axles and covered over 1000km throughout the project.
